I read The Tao of Pooh
The Tao of Pooh will encourage you to slow down and value the traits of our favorite “silly old bear.”
I’ve always been interested in Taoism, so I jumped at the chance to borrow my friend Bo’s book The Tao of Pooh. The Tao of Pooh walks through the principles of Tao by providing examples from The House at Pooh Corner. The book flows through a conversation between the author and the characters in Winnie-the-Pooh. Taoism is a Chinese philosophical and spiritual tradition that emphasizes living in harmony with nature. It dates back to 400 BCE and has had a significant influence on Chinese culture and values. The explains that Pooh is the main character because of his traits--that he is an “uncarved block” that does not push against nature but is effortlessly calm and well-meaning. The author then walks through some of the faults of the other character’s signature traits-worrying, waiting, always busy, and over-valuing education.
The book is a super quick read. The author gets to his point quickly and clearly in a way that is easy to understand the meaning of the example and thought-provoking about how you carry yourself every day. Through school, I valued getting done more than anyone else and honoring intellect to an unhealthy level. This book encourages me to slow down and see the wisdom in following the flow of nature and understanding those around me.
Rating: 10/10- I encourage everyone to take a few minutes each day to read this book. It is simple yet thought-provoking and a great introduction to Eastern philosophy that has been celebrated for centuries.
